(뉴질랜드= KTN) 박춘태 기자= 지난 6월 29일(토) 뉴질랜드 와이카토 한인회(회장 고정미)에서는 ‘2024 와이카토 케이 페스티벌(K-Festival)’이 개최되었다. 이번 행사의 후원 단체로는 재외동포청(청장 이기철)과 뉴질랜드한인회총연합회(회장 홍승필)였으며, 한인 사업체 등에서 다양한 협찬이 있었다. 행사 장소는 해밀턴 챠트웰 연합교회(126 Comries Rd. Chartwell. Hamilton)에서 이뤄졌는데, 500명 이상의 한인동포와 현지인 등이 참여하여 성황을 이루었다.

행사 당일, 아침부터 흐린 날씨였지만 비가 오지 않아 행사를 무사히 마칠 수 있었다. 행사장 입구에 빨강 파랑의 청사초롱을 장식하였으며, 다양한 한국음식 판매대가 행사장 안에 마련됐다. 

와이카토 한인회에 따르면, 오전 10시부터 기념식이 시작되었으며 케이 페스티벌(K-Festival)을 주관한 고정미 와이카토 한인회장은 인사말을 통해 ‘한인회가 마련한 잔치를 모두 즐기기를 바란다’며 수고한 한인회 임원들을 일일이 소개했다. 한인 최초의 장관인, 멜리사 지연 리(Melissa Ji-Yun Lee) 뉴질랜드 소수민족부 장관은 와이카토 케이 페시티발 축제에 축하 메시지를 전해왔으며, 오클랜드 분관 김태찬 영사는 ‘와이카토 한인회에서 이런 뜻깊은 행사를 마련해 주어 거듭 고맙다’는 인사를 전했다.

“팀 매킨도시” 시의원은 ‘해밀턴은 다민족의 활동이 가장 활발한 곳’이라며, ‘이번 행사를 통해 더 많은 다민족들이 참여할 수 있어 기쁘다’고 말했다. 아울러 와이카토 다민족 협의회 라빈다 파워 회장은 ‘열정적인 한인들의 참여와 다민족이 힘을 합쳐 일한다면 더 풍성한 해밀턴이 될 것’이라고 했다. 또 한뉴우정협회 리차드 로렌스 공동회장은 ‘오늘 한국음식을 많이 판매하는데 그 중에서도 김치는 꼭 맛보아야 한다’고 말해 많은 한인들과 현지인들의 웃음을 자아냈다.

내빈들의 축사에 이어, 차성욱 설옥금 부부의 사물놀이와 송영이 씨의 노래 열창, 옥승아 씨의 부채춤은 아름다운 한국문화의 진수를 보여주었다. 이후 한인회 임원 및 일반 참여자들의 한복패션쇼가 있었는데, 한복의 아름다움과 우아함은 보는 사람들로 하여금 감동과 매료를 주기에 충분했다.

음식 판매대에서는 30여가지의 다양한 한국 음식을 판매하였다. 한국 스타일의 닭고기, 김밥, 잡채, 떡볶이, 군만두, 녹두전, 김치전, 식혜, 어묵볶음, 어묵탕, 육개장, 제육덮밥, 불고기덮밥, 비빕밥, 쫄면, 호떡, 김, 솜사탕, 달고나 등 이었으며 한국 음식의 인기도를 실감할 수 있었다. 또한 김치 시연회도 열렸는데, 김치판매대에서 장갑을 끼고 절인 배추에 속을 넣고 김치를 만들기도 했다. 

오후 1시부터는 케이팝(K-pop) 경연대회가 열렸다. 총 11팀이 참가했는데, 한인은 5팀이, 현지인들은 6팀이 참가하여 다양한 장르를 선보였다.  

이번 경연대회에서 1위를 차지한 김다민 씨는 ‘케이팝을 널리 알리고 싶어 아이들을 다 재운 시간에야 연습을 했다’고 도전 이유를 밝혀 감동을 자아냈다. 노래 ‘어머나’로 장려상을 받은 황유진 학생은 웰링턴에서 열리는 K-트롯 노래자랑대회에 와이카토를 대표로 출전하게 되었다.  

와이카토 한인회에 따르면, 이번 행사는 많은 사람들이 한국문화와 한국음식을 즐기고 케이팝(K-Pop)의 열기까지 경험한 뜻깊은 시간이었다. 한인들과 다양한 민족이 함께 하고 세대를 초월하여 모두가 힘을 합친다면, 와이카토 해밀턴이 세계 속에서 살기 좋은 도시가 될 것이라는 것을 보여주기도 한 귀한 시간이었다고 전했다.

The 'K-Festival' was held in Waikato, North Island, New Zealand

Reporter Park Chun-tae (New Zealand = KTN) = The "2024 Waikato K Festival" was held at the Waikato Korean Association (Chairman Ko Jung-mi) in New Zealand on June 29 (Saturday). The sponsoring organizations of this event were the Overseas Korean Administration (Director Lee Ki-chul) and the Korean Association of New Zealand (Chairman Hong Seung-pil), and there were various sponsorships from Korean businesses. The event was held at the Hamilton Chartwell United Church (126 Comries Rd. Chartwell. Hamilton), where more than 500 Koreans and locals participated.

On the day of the event, it was cloudy from the morning, but it did not rain, so I was able to finish the event safely. A red-blue Cheongsachorong was decorated at the entrance of the venue, and various Korean food stands were set up inside the venue.

According to the Waikato Korean Association, the ceremony began at 10 a.m., and Ko Jung-mi, president of the Waikato Korean Association, who hosted the K-Festival, introduced the executives of the Korean Association in a greeting, saying, "I hope you enjoy all the feasts organized by the Korean Association." New Zealand's Minister of Minority and People's Affairs, Melissa Ji-Yun Lee, the first Korean minister, has sent a congratulatory message to the Waikato K-Festival, and Kim Tae-chan, the consul of Auckland, said, "Thank you again for preparing such a meaningful event at the Waikato Korean Association."

City Councilman Tim Mackin said, "Hamilton is the most active place for multiethnic activities," adding, "I am happy that more multiethnic people can participate through this event." In addition, Rabinda Power, chairman of the Waikato Multiethnic Council, said, "If passionate Koreans participate and multiethnic people work together, it will be a richer Hamilton." In addition, Richard Lawrence, co-chairman of the Korea New Post Association, said, "We sell a lot of Korean food today, and kimchi is a must-taste among them," drawing laughter from many Koreans and locals.

Following the guests' congratulatory remarks, Cha Sung-wook and Seol Ok-geum's Samulnori, Song Yeong-i's singing, and Ok Seung-ah's fan dance showed the essence of beautiful Korean culture. Since then, there have been hanbok fashion shows by Korean association executives and general participants, and the beauty and elegance of hanbok were enough to impress and fascinate viewers.

The food stand sold about 30 different kinds of Korean food. Korean-style chicken, gimbap, japchae, tteokbokki, fried dumplings, mungdujeon, kimchi pancake, sikhye, stir-fried fish cake, yukgaejang, pork rice bowl, stir-fried bulgogi with rice, Bibimbap, jjolmyeon, hotteok, laver, cotton candy, and dalgona were the examples, and the popularity of Korean food was realized. There was also a kimchi demonstration, where people wore gloves and made kimchi with pickled cabbage.

From 1 p.m., the K-pop contest was held. A total of 11 teams participated, with 5 Korean teams and 6 local people participating in various genres.

Kim Da-min, who won first place in this competition, was impressed by the reason for the challenge, saying, "I practiced only at the time when all the children were put to sleep because I wanted to promote K-pop." Hwang Yu-jin, who received the incentive award for her song "Oh My God," will represent Waikato at the K-trot Singing Contest in Wellington.

According to the Waikato Korean Association, this event was a meaningful time for many people to enjoy Korean culture and Korean food and even experience the heat of K-Pop. It was also a precious time to show that if Koreans and various ethnic groups join forces across generations, Waikato Hamilton will become a good city to live in the world.
