경북 산불을 진화하기 위해 강원도에서 긴급 투입된 헬기가 추락했다. 그 안에 타고 있던 70대 조종사는 끝내 돌아오지 못했다. 산불을 막기 위해 한치 앞도 보이지 않는 짙은 연기 속을 뚫고, 불기둥 위를 오가며 사투를 벌이던 그의 마지막 비행이었다.

그는 단순한 조종사가 아니었다. 불길이 삼켜버릴지도 모르는 위험을 무릅쓰고, 오직 한 가지 목표를 위해 하늘을 날았다. 바로, 사람들의 삶과 자연을 지키는 것이었다. 우리는 흔히 영웅을 영화 속에서나 떠올리지만, 정작 우리 곁의 진짜 영웅들은 재난 현장에서 묵묵히 자신을 희생하고 있다.

의성군의 천년고찰 고운사(孤雲寺)를 지키기 위해 헌신한 소방대원들과 군인들의 노력 역시 가슴을 울린다. 불길이 거세게 치솟는 상황에서도 물을 뿌리고 방화선을 구축하며, 사력을 다해 사찰을 지켜낸 그들의 투혼은 단순한 직업적 의무를 넘어선다.

화마는 단순한 자연재해가 아니다. 그것은 인간의 생명과 터전을 위협하는 재앙이며, 이를 막아내기 위해 목숨을 건 이들이 있기에 우리는 재난을 극복할 수 있다. 우리 역사를 되돌아보면, 위기의 순간마다 민족은 단결했고, 결국 어려움을 극복해왔다. 지금도 마찬가지다. 산불을 진화하기 위해 온 힘을 다하는 이들에게 우리가 보내야 할 것은 단순한 연민이 아니다. 그들이 안전하게 돌아올 수 있도록, 더 나은 장비와 환경을 제공하고, 그들의 희생을 잊지 않겠다는 다짐이 필요하다.

산불이 휩쓴 자리는 다시 녹색으로 덮일 것이다. 그러나 우리 마음속에는 이 순간을 기억해야 한다. 그리고 그들의 희생이 헛되지 않도록, 더 나은 대책과 지원을 마련하는 것이 남아 있는 우리의 몫이다.

He was not just a pilot. He flew for only one goal, risking the flames to swallow. It was to protect people's lives and nature. We often think of heroes in movies, but the real heroes around us silently sacrifice themselves at the scene of the disaster.

The efforts of firefighters and soldiers who devoted themselves to protecting 孤 Temple, a thousand-year-old temple in Uiseong-gun, also resonate. Their fighting spirit, which sprinkles water, builds fire lines, and protects the temple with all their might, goes beyond simple professional duties.

Fire is not just a natural disaster. It is a disaster that threatens human lives and homes, and we can overcome it because we have people who risked their lives to prevent it. Looking back on our history, at every moment of crisis, the people have united and eventually overcome difficulties. The same is true now. What we should send to those who are doing their best to extinguish the forest fires is not just compassion. We need a commitment to provide better equipment and environment so that they can return safely and not forget their sacrifices.

Where the wildfires swept will be covered in green again. But we must remember this moment in our minds. And it is up to us to come up with better measures and support so that their sacrifices will not be in vain.
