한국 문학계와 교육계는 이제 한강 작가의 노벨 문학상 수상을 기점으로 분기된다. 그 전과 후의 풍경은 확연히 달라질 것이다. 우리는 어린 시절부터 노벨 문학상을 받은 작가들, 그리고 그들이 태어난 나라를 동경하곤 했다. 그들의 이름은 교과서에 실리고, 우리는 그 나라를 하나의 문학적 성지로 여겼다. 노벨 문학상이 주는 가치는 그러하다. 그 나라의 문학적, 문화적 이미지는 세계인의 마음에 깊이 각인된다.

이제, 그 성지 중 하나가 대한민국이 되었다.

한강은 한국의 아픔과 정서를 글 속에 고스란히 담아냈다. 그녀의 문학은 인간의 보편적인 가치를 다시금 되새기게 만든다. 그녀의 글을 읽으며 우리는 삶, 고통, 상실, 그리고 치유의 이야기를 듣는다. 하지만 그러한 보편성 속에 깃든 것은 분명 한국인만이 이해할 수 있는 독특한 정서다. 그녀는 우리를 대신해 한국의 역사를 이야기했고, 그것이 세계인의 마음을 울렸다.

물론 모든 이가 그녀의 문학에 박수를 보내는 것은 아니다. 때로는 정치적 이념을 이유로 비난을 보내는 이들도 있다. 그들의 비평이 아닌 비난은 종종 그들이 살아온 인생의 기질에서 비롯된 것일지 모른다. 하지만 한 사람의 삶이 그토록 깊이 담긴 작품을 이념의 잣대로만 재단하는 것은 옳지 않다. 인간은 인간으로서 그러한 다른 견해를 이해할 수 있어야 한다. 그럼에도 불구하고, 한 가지 사실만은 분명하다. 외국인의 눈에 비친 한강의 업적은 우리가 생각하는 것보다 훨씬 더 위대하다.

대한민국은 이제 세계가 주목하는 문학 강국으로 자리매김했다. 우리는 세계인의 마음으로 한강을 격려해야 한다. 그녀가 대한민국에 남긴 자산은 단순히 문학상의 하나가 아니다. 우리 아이들이 자라면서 이룰 수 있는 가능성, 그들이 누리게 될 무한한 자산이자 긍지다. 한강 작가는 우리의 문학적 정체성을 세계 무대에 새겼고, 그로 인해 대한민국의 역사는 다시 쓰여졌다.

대한민국은 이제 세계의 무대에서 새로운 이야기를 써 내려가고 있다. 우리는 그 첫 장을 한강과 함께 열었다.

The Korean literary and educational circles are now branched out by Han Kang's acceptance of the Nobel Prize in Literature. The landscape before and after that will be markedly different. We used to admire the writers who received the Nobel Prize in Literature from childhood, and the country where they were born. Their names are included in textbooks, and we regard the country as a literary holy place. So is the value of the Nobel Prize in Literature. Its literary and cultural image is deeply imprinted in the hearts of people around the world.

Now, one of the holy sites has become Korea.

Han Kang captured Korea's pain and emotions in her writings. Her literature reminds us of universal human values again. Reading her writings, we hear stories of life, pain, loss, and healing. But what lies in such universality is certainly a unique emotion that only Koreans can understand. She talked about Korea's history on our behalf, and it touched the hearts of people around the world.

Of course, not everyone applauds her literature. Sometimes some criticize citing political ideology. Accusations, not their criticisms, may often stem from the temperament of the lives they have lived. However, it is not correct to judge a work that contains such depth in one's life only with ideological standards. As a human being, one must be able to understand such different views. Nevertheless, one fact is clear. Han's achievements in foreigners' eyes are far greater than we think.

Korea has now established itself as a literary powerhouse that the world is paying attention to. We should encourage Han Kang with the hearts of people around the world. The assets she left in Korea are not just one of the literary awards. The possibilities our children can achieve as they grow up, the infinite assets and pride they will enjoy. Writer Han Kang engraved our literary identity on the world stage, and with it, the history of the Republic of Korea was rewritten.

Korea is now writing a new story on the world stage. We opened the first chapter with the Han Kang.
