한강이 노벨 문학상을 수상한 날, 나는 창문을 열어 신선한 아침 공기를 들이마셨다. 바깥세상은 평소와 다름없이 일상을 살아가고 있었지만, 내 마음속엔 묘한 떨림이 자리하고 있었다. 웹소설과 웹툰의 시대, 인문학의 자리를 잃어버린 듯 보였던 그 때, 그녀의 수상 소식은 메마른 대지에 내리는 한 줄기 비처럼 다가왔다. 한강, 그녀의 이름은 이제 한국 문학의 빛나는 이정표가 되어 세상을 환히 비추고 있다.

그러나 그 이면에는 또 다른 존재가 있었다. 데보라 스미스, 한강의 작품을 번역해 세계 독자들에게 전해준 사람이다. 데보라는 영국 옥스포드에서 영미문학을 공부하고, 런던대 SOAS에서 한국문학을 연구한 학자였다. 그녀가 아니었다면 〈채식주의자〉는 지금도 한국어라는 언어의 담장 안에 갇혀 있었을지도 모른다. 이 두 여인이 만들어낸 합작품은 단순히 문학을 넘어선, 언어와 문화의 경계를 허물며 세계의 감성을 울리는 하나의 다리였다.

한강의 수상 소식에 마음이 뜨거워진 나는 또 한 번 문학의 힘을 믿기로 했다. 그리고 그날 아침, 나 역시 세상에 아직 알려지지 않은, 어딘가에 존재할 주옥같은 이야기들을 떠올리며, 한강의 여정을 따라 언젠가 그런 순간을 맞이할 수 있기를 꿈꿨다. 노벨 문학상이 다시금 우리에게 던진 질문에, 내가 쓸 답변을 마음속으로 되새기며.

On the day Han Kang won the Nobel Prize in Literature, I opened the window and breathed in the fresh morning air. The outside world was living its daily life as usual, but there was a strange tremor in my mind. At a time when the age of web novels and webtoons seemed to have lost their place in the humanities, the news of her win came like a rain falling on the parched earth. Han Kang's name has now become a shining milestone in Korean literature, illuminating the world.

However, there was another existence behind it. He translated the works of Deborah Smith and Han Kang and passed them on to world readers. Deborah was a scholar who studied English-American literature in Oxford, England and Korean literature in SOAS, University of London. If it wasn't for her, *the vegetarian* might still be trapped inside the fence of the Korean language today. The collaboration these two women created was a bridge that goes beyond just literature, breaking down the boundaries of language and culture and resonating the emotions of the world.

There are still precious writings hidden in the world. How important it is to reveal them to the world and turn them into language of emotions. Literature has not disappeared. However, we have entered an era where it is difficult for our senses to feel the depth of literature. Han Kang's award was the starting point of that new possibility.

The process by which the Nobel Prize in Literature is chosen is mysterious. Every January, countless nominees from all over the world are quietly listed. The names are read, discussed, and forgotten by only a few. And in October, on a day of high-profile global attention, the winner's name is called. But discussions, reviews, and all the information surrounding this process are kept secret for 50 years. This closed-door procedure rather heightens the prize's authority. What logic and algorithm is it determined by, the Nobel Prize in Literature?

I'm curious about the logic that sometimes moves the hearts of Nobel committee members. How they are moved by what text and how they reach their decision. They will probably respond to the depth of the work, the artist's insight into humanity's universal experiences, and above all, the true feelings. We will be touched again when a winner emerges from an unexpected place. The world's stunning moments.

I decided to believe in the power of literature once again when I was heartened by the news of Han Kang's award. And that morning, I also dreamed that I could face such a moment along the Han River's journey, recalling the stories like gem that still remain unknown in the world. When asked again by the Nobel Prize for Literature, I reflected on the answers I would write in my heart.

Like Elise Monroe, I decided to keep those moments and not let them slip away casually.
