(뉴질랜드= KTN) 박춘태 기자= 뉴질랜드 정부는 한국의 유엔군사령부(UNC, 이하 유엔사)에 파견돼 근무하는 뉴질랜드 군인 숫자를 늘릴 계획이라고 발표했다. 유엔사는 1950년 한국 전쟁 발발 직후 창설된 것으로, 현재 17개국에서 병력을 파견하고 있다. 

이들 나라를 보면, 그리스, 남아프리카공화국, 미국, 호주, 벨기에, 캐나다, 콜롬비아, 덴마크, 프랑스, 이탈리아, 네덜란드, 뉴질랜드, 노르웨이, 필리핀, 태국, 터키, 영국 등 17개국이다. 유엔사의 역할은 유사시 별도의 유엔 안전보장이사회 결의없이 회원국 전력을 제공할 수 있다는 데 있다.

지난 6월 11일 뉴질랜드 1뉴스 등에 의하면, 뉴질랜드 국방부는 한국의 파견 병력을 현재 12명에서 41명을 추가한 53명으로 증원하기로 결정했다. 이는 무려 4배 이상 늘리겠다는 의도다. 아울러 군사정전위원회의 뉴질랜드 병력 참여 규모도 늘어날 것이라고 밝혔다. 

이에 따라 한국 장기 파병 임무를 2026년 9월까지 연장했다고 밝혔다. 1998년부터 뉴질랜드는 유엔사와 유엔 군사정전위원회에 병력을 파견했는데, 한국을 비롯해 미국, 호주, 캐나다, 영국, 필리핀 등의 군인들과 함께 근무한다.

뉴질랜드 주디스 콜린스(Judith Collins) 국방부 장관은 성명을 통해 “이번 결정은 대한민국에 대한 뉴질랜드의 강한 책임과 더불어 한반도는 물론, 인도-태평양 지역의 평화와 안정을 더욱 폭넓게 지원하기 위해 뉴질랜드가 나서야 할 필요가 있다는 판단에 따른 것”이라고 설명했다. 또한 “이번 파병은 뉴질랜드 방위군이 다국적 환경에서 자신의 경험, 기술과 리더십을 활용할 수 있는 훌륭한 기회”라고 덧붙였다.

추가되는 41명의 근무 지역으로는 유엔사 의장대(UNC Honour Guard)에 6명, 비무장지대의 공동경비구역(JSA)에 35명이 배치될 예정이다. 

윈스턴 피터스(Winston Peters) 외무장관은 이번 한국에 파병을 확대하는 이유에 대해 뉴질랜드가 집단 안보를 확보하기 위한 노력의 일환으로 인도-태평양 지역의 평화, 안정, 국제 질서를 지원하는데 중요한 의의가 있다고 말했다.

New Zealand "increases U.N. troops in South Korea and strengthens its role"

(New Zealand = KTN) Reporter Park Chun-tae = The New Zealand government announced that it plans to increase the number of New Zealand soldiers who will be dispatched to the United Nations Command (UNC) in South Korea. 

The UNC was established shortly after the outbreak of the Korean War in 1950 and is currently sending troops from 17 countries. In terms of these countries, there are 17 countries, including Greece, South Africa, the United States, Australia, Belgium, Canada, Colombia, Denmark, France, Italy, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, the Philippines, Thailand, Turkey, and the United Kingdom. 

The UNC's role is to be able to provide member states' power without a separate UN Security Council resolution in case of emergency.

According to New Zealand 1 News on June 11, the Ministry of National Defense of New Zealand decided to increase Korea's contingent from the current 12 to 53, adding 41. The intention is to more than quadruple this. The Military Armistice Commission's participation in New Zealand forces will also increase.

As a result, it has announced that it has extended its long-term mission to send troops to Korea until September 2026. Since 1998, New Zealand has dispatched troops to the United Nations Command and the U.N. Military Armistice Commission, working with soldiers from Korea, the U.S., Australia, Canada, the U.K., and the Philippines.

New Zealand Defense Minister Judith Collins said in a statement, "The decision is based on New Zealand's strong responsibility to the Republic of Korea, as well as the judgment that New Zealand needs to step up to support peace and stability more broadly in the Indo-Pacific region as well as the Korean Peninsula." He also added, "This dispatch is an excellent opportunity for the New Zealand Defense Forces to utilize their experience, skills, and leadership in a multinational environment."

The additional 41 working areas will include six at the UNC Honor Guard and 35 at the Joint Security Area (JSA) in the Demilitarized Zone.

As for the reason for the expansion of the dispatch of troops to South Korea, Foreign Minister Winston Peters said New Zealand is of great significance in supporting peace, stability and international order in the Indo-Pacific region as part of its efforts to secure collective security.
